Antique Georgian 18k and Enamel Mourning Band- Mrs Alice Henderson

Details: This is a lovely and sentimental mourning ring fabricated of 18k gold and black enamel with fine milgrain edges. The wonderfully graphic bands of black enamel gives the ring it's striking design. The exterior reads Mrs. Alice Henderson ob 2 May 1817 AE 88.

Mourning jewelry was especially popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras. Considered a celebration of life and remembrance. money was set aside in the deceased's will for pieces of jewelry to be fabricated in their honor and distributed as remembrance pieces to loved ones. The receivers wore the jewelry - typically done with black detailing and/or dark stones alongside all black attire during a set mourning period.

We love this custom of honoring the deceased and the heartbreakingly beautiful craftsmanship of these poignant and collectable pieces.

Measurements: The ring size is size  8.75.
